Responses: Praise

We lift our voice in praise:

For the benediction of great poetry, with its healing touch upon human spirits;

For the inspiration of noble music, which can breed harmony within the soul:

For the great and wise books of the ages, which can lift up the mind as to the mountain tops;

For all fine personalities, who carry about them a secret music in the heart.

For all these we lift up our voice in praise!

Adapted from the Guru Granth Sahib 2

You are the Lord

We pray to You.

You have favoured us with our being and body.

You are Mother and Father, We are Your children.

In Your grace lie many comforts,

No one knows the limits [of Your glory].

O Lord, You are higher than the highest,

The whole creation stands on Your [support].

Whatever has sprung from You abides by Your will.

Mansukhani, G. S. (1994), Hymns from the Guru Granth Sahib, New Delhi: Hemkunt Press, 25.

Adapted from the Guru Granth Sahib 24

You are my Father

You are my Mother

You are my Kinsman

You are my Brother,

In all places

You are my protector

Then why should I have fear and anxiety?

By Your grace I have realised You.

You are my shelter

You are my pride,

There is no other beside You

The whole universe is the field of Your sport.

You have created all people and other beings.

You have allotted tasks to each according to Your will.

All that is done is Your doing.

There is nothing that comes to fruition by our power.

By meditating on Your Name, [we can attain] supreme bliss.

By singing God's praises, [our souls can calm].

By the perfect Guru's grace, Nanak is full of rejoicing.

Congratulations [pour in] on his victory in the battlefield of life.

Adapted from the Guru Granth Sahib 30

[We] seek only one bounty from [our] Lord:

That He should bless [us] with meditation on the Name and then all [our] tasks would be fulfilled. (Pause)

May His presence remain in [our hearts] and [we] may be blessed with the society of saints.

May [our minds] be not enveloped by the fire of sorrow and may [we] sing His praises day and night.

May [we] serve God in []childhood

And contemplate on Him in [] youth and old age.

From the Guru Granth Sahib 40

The streets are muddy: the House of [our] Spouse is far

But [we are] in love with [our] Lord.

If [we] go out (in the rain) my blanket gets wet and, if [we] stay behind, [we] falter in [our] Love!

Let [our] blanket be wetted in the rains sent by God:

[] [We] must meet my Love, lest it break and [we] [become] lost.
