Closing their eyes, steadying their breathing, and focussing their attention on the centre of spiritual consciousness, the wise master their senses, mind, and intellect through meditation. Self realisation is their only goal. Freed from selfish desire, fear and anger, they live in freedom always. Knowing me as the friend of all creatures, the Lord of the universe, the end of all offerings and spiritual disciplines, they attain eternal peace.
(Ch. 5, vv. 27-29. The Bhagavad Gita)
It is not those who lack energy or refrain from action, but those who work without expectation of reward who attain the goal of meditation. Theirs is true renunciation.
(Ch. 6, v. 1. The Bhagavad Gita)
To offer service to the gods, to the good, to the wise, and to your spiritual teacher; purity, honesty, continence and non-violence: these are the disciplines of the body. To offer soothing words, to speak truly, kindly, and helpfully, and to study the scrpitures: these are the disciplines of speech. Calmness, gentleness, silence, self restraint, and purity: these are the disciplines of the mind.
(Ch. 17, vv. 14-16. The Bhagavad Gita)
